While Google AdSense accepts a wide variety of content, there are specific topics that are completely blacklisted — no matter how well-written the content is or how much traffic the site receives. Understanding these is essential before you even build your site.
1. Sexually Explicit Content
Any content that shows or describes sexual activity, nudity, or is designed to arouse sexual interest is absolutely prohibited. This includes written content, images, videos, and even sites that primarily link to adult content. Even a single adult page on an otherwise clean site can get the entire domain rejected.
2. Content Sexualizing Minors (CSAM)
This carries the most severe consequences — immediate account termination and reporting to law enforcement. There are absolutely no exceptions to this rule.
3. Dangerous Content Promoting Violence
Content that glorifies, encourages, or provides instructions for violence against people or animals. This includes weapons modification guides that enable illegal use, bomb-making instructions, or content that promotes real-world violence.
4. Hate Speech
Content that promotes discrimination or hatred against groups based on race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or veteran status. Educational content discussing these topics from an informational perspective is generally allowed.
5. Illegal Drug Sales
Content that sells or promotes illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, or substances designed to produce the same effects as controlled substances. General drug education and harm reduction content may be acceptable.
6. Hacking and Cracking Tools
Guides for hacking systems without authorization, cracking software DRM, unauthorized piracy tools, RATs (Remote Access Trojans), and credential theft tools. Cybersecurity education from a defensive perspective is generally acceptable.
7. Counterfeit Products
Any content promoting the sale of counterfeit goods — fake branded items, replicas designed to deceive buyers, or any product that infringes on intellectual property rights.
8. Malware and Deceptive Software Distribution
Sites that distribute or promote malware, spyware, adware, or any software that deceives users or causes harm to their devices. This includes misleading download buttons and fake software updates.
9. Gambling Sites Without License
Unlicensed gambling operations are prohibited. Licensed gambling content can run AdSense in certain markets but requires a valid gambling license and must geo-restrict ads appropriately.
10. Content Encouraging Dangerous Activities
Self-harm guides, "pro-eating disorder" content, dangerous medical procedures without professional oversight, and any content that puts readers in genuine risk of physical harm.
11. Misleading Health Claims
Content making unsubstantiated health claims — miracle cures, cancer-curing supplements, or medical treatments that aren't scientifically proven. "Fake science" health content will be rejected.
The Gray Areas
Some content exists in gray areas where AdSense may or may not approve depending on context, country, and how the topic is handled:
- Cannabis/marijuana content (allowed in some regions, prohibited in others)
- Arms/firearms content (legal educational content ok, illegal modifications not ok)
- Political content (allowed, but must follow election advertising guidelines)
- Alcohol content (allowed in markets where legal, must not target minors)
